Three-time Juno winner at Sound of Music

Three-time Juno Award-winning musician David Francey will help round out the finale of the Burlington Sound of Music Festival taking place June 17-20 on a traditional note, pulling from his roots folk reservoir of acclaimed music.

Francey has won many awards, from Junos to SOCAN, with his roots folk music that showcases his love of his adopted land. He came to Canada in 1966 with his family and his new homeland inspired many future songs. But it wasn’t until later in life when he made music his way of life.

Francey was born in 1954 in Ayrshire, Scotland. Working with his hands from a young age, Francey left his job in construction only just over a decade ago. The move paid off. He released his first album, Torn Screen Door in 1999 and his second album, Far End of Summer (2001), won Francey his first Juno Award. He released his third album, Skating Rink (2003), and won another Juno Award for it.

The next album, Waking Hour (2004), garnered a Juno nomination. He released The First Set — Live From Folk Alley in 2006 and Carols for Christmas Eve in 2006. In 2007, he released Right of Passage, which received his third Juno Award. Most recently, he released Seaway (2009) with Mike Ford of Moxy Fruvous.

“There was the usual trepidation (when leaving carpentry) but I did both for a while to bridge the gap,” explained Francey. “It turned out just great. The success was enough to keep going. Winning the Juno awards was huge in terms of recognition and credibility. It’s something permanent; I’m proud.”

His song Skating Rink was chosen as the official theme song for Hockey Day in Canada and the well-known Rankin Family has covered his music.

“I’m the world’s most mediocre hockey player, but I love hockey so wrote that song as I was loading up a van for a tour,” said Francey. “I love it when people cover my songs; it’s as cool as it gets. I’m grateful for my success. The Rankins have been great to me as has Europe, I like the idea of Canadian songs being covered over there.”

Along with the Rankins, his songs have been performed by artists including Del McCoury, James Keelaghan and Harvey Reid among others.

His songs draw on his life adventures from hitching across Canada, which he did three times, and working laborious jobs for most of his life.

“There’s a bit of social conscience (in my songs),” he said. “I write about what I see and how I feel about it. I tend to comment in songs when so moved but I’m not overtly political; I’ll put in when the mood strikes me and suffer the consequences or receive accolades.”

The International Acoustic Music Awards gave him five stars as his “rootsy folk songs exhibit outstanding lyrics.”

“I’m extremely happy they stressed my lyrics as that’s where I work the hardest. I’ve written poetry since I was a kid and, eventually, they turned into lyrics. It’s rare but I get the melody and lyrics at the same time. It’s an organic process which can take for other or be very quick.”

With eight albums in just over 10 years, Francey is working on his next album scheduled to be released later this year.

He will be pulling from all his material at his performance at the Sound of Music Festival.

“I’ll be performing with Craig Werth who is a terrific singer/songwriter himself. It’s my first time playing Sound of Music Festival so I’m glad to be part of it. I’ll play a cross-section of tunes; I still like them all. I’ll play a few from Seaway and a few songs off Right of Passage, whatever I feel like playing; it’ll be fun, I’m looking forward to it.”

Francey performs at 4 p.m. on Cogeco stage.
