Burlington Public Library is offering fun programs for kids to enjoy this summer.

The Destination Jungle Reading Club for Kids and special events are being offered at all library locations.

• The Passport to Jungle Adventures is on until Aug. 31. Register for a passport at any library location. There is a new jungle adventure to experience each week. For each tropical task you complete, get a stamp in your passport. Get four stamps during the summer and you get a ballot for a chance to win a Jungle Jackpot.

The program is free and is for children ages six and up.

• Destination Jungle! TD Summer Reading Club for Kids, June 26 -Aug. 21:

Young readers up to age five can join the Read to Me Club and earn small rewards for every five books read, while full-time school students can join Summer Readers with a goal to read 12 books or for 12 hours over the eight-week program. Summer Readers who reach the goal get a ticket to a party on Wednesday, Aug. 25. The program is free.

Runners will race through the streets of downtown Burlington Thursday, July 15 in the 16th annual Eaton Downtown Dash.

The five- and 10-kilometre races start at 7 p.m. at Pine and Pearl streets. More than 700 participants ran the fast, flat courses last year and more are expected this year.

Rob Koziarski won last year’s 5-km race in a time of 15 minutes and 26 seconds with Fred Karanja taking the 10-km race in 32:06. Both will defend their titles on Thursday.

There is also a 1-km race available with all pledges and donations directed to the Big Brothers and Sisters of Hamilton Burlington.

The first 500 entrants receive coloured T-shirts and medals. There are also prizes for the top three finishers in each age category in five-year increments from 10-and-under to 70-plus.

The post-race party features a DJ and treats from Boston Pizza and Honey West.

Online registration is available on www.vrpro.ca until Tuesday, July 13 at 5 p.m. Registration and pick up available at the Burlington Running Room, 3300 Fairview St., Wednesday, July 14 from 11a.m.-7 p.m. and on race day at Pine and Pearl streets from 5-6:30 p.m.

Well, I am sure you can agree that have the central A/C not working during this heat wave is just no fun at all.  That is what happened to me about about week or so ago… it was running, but other than making noise it certainly was not cooling the house or doing anything!

I was out walking – delivering my monthly newsletters to my neighbourhood.  As I was walking down Heidi I spotted a house with all KINDS of stuff at the end of the drive, upon closer inspection I see it’s old duct work, an old furnace, and an old A/C.   Hummmmm, now I pay attention to the truck parked there and copy down MIKE’S HVAC and his phone / email address.

When I returned home I called Mike, who promptly called me back and explained my sad story.  We set up an appointment for him to come to the house and check things out.  The next day he called to let me know his day freed up – could he come sooner!  OF COURSE!

He shows up, and checks out my A/C and is able to repair it in short order and for a most reasonable cost.

Ahhhhhhhhh…. cool comfort again.

If you need A/C service (or replacement) I HIGHLY recommend MIKE’s HAVC.  He is professional, knowledgeable and was very respectful of my home.

Well, I am sure most of you know that the HST came into effect on July 1, 2010.  There are many items NOT affected at all by the HST but there are others that are.  Check this link for a list of the changes.

Specific to Home Purchases, here are the changes that you will find:

5  The new housing rebate will be 75 per cent of the Ontario component of the HST, up to a maximum of $24,000. The rebate will ensure that buyers of homes priced up to $400,000 will, on average, pay no more tax than under the PST system. However, applicable PST on building supplies is embedded in the price of the home.
